If we being honest here I first though I was going to eat something that was coming from a strange insect but whatever… I guess this time they pick flower and this is good! So you might seen its all bright red when you see them at shop but actually, they only exist a teeny amount in the middle of the plant. Not whole bunch of this.. just these red “sparks”, ya feel me? And it take alot of them flower to get enough of that “thing” – which explains a bit why it expensive right?, we gonna get in that. Basically you’re looking at dried threads. Like, imagine trying to harvest super fine red hairs – that what basically happens.

The old world history class wasn’t lying about these saffron. Not like the ones i used to hate. So here we see this little tiny ‘stigma” playing the role like something from those games with ancient greek and so.. and we still talkin’ bout them even after thousands of years.. not bad ha?

Let me tell you, this harvesting is where thing get a little, mmm, ‘hardworking’. One by one. No, like robots here! they really go though it with them little hand . Can we be grateful enough for this hardworking?, it like finding a tiny thing at the middle of the ocean without some big tech help… that much manual labor to see the threads…and not just to find them!. These workers deserves all those cash!. So yeah, its super manual. Like something ancient man would do back before car’s, and even computers… like this is “nature manual way”, you see.

Okay, elephant in the room: the PRICE. We were get to that at first . I mentioned all this stuff, all this manually harvesting from the small flower thingies that show their self for a small moment only during one week of the year … so when you hear people that say saffron costs more than GOLD this sounds no like the normal price you gonna buy the stuff!
So imagine you want make even like just few gramm, it takes thousand of flower. Yes, not ten. Not hundreds. Thousandssss! That is what those worker actually did with hand!. Then they dry ’em by hand. They go tough some pretty big stuff.
Then you know… there a lot demand for them . and this “scarce item + bunch of hands to make + worldwide obsession to get one piece” … it turns into, expensive stuff… we all know the stories!. So all thing this is just a matter of numbers, supply , demand.

Here’s where things gets cool. We often imagine saffron to be only those snobby restaurants to look super cool in they “small piece, expensive price dishes”… the truth is, is really super powerful flavor and you need super-less of it . But once its in? Bam!!, some dishes get transformed to other dimension. You’ve seen in it like rice dishes – the paella or biryani. Its what gives those dishes that bright yellow-orangish vibe… not just a coloring. Saffron brings out the ‘wow’, and some flavor i cant even start to explain!. Then think soups, sauces, teas, even baking!. You gonna use these “ancient gold” more than just at dinner now. and here my thoughts that you only using one little thing out there and the price of the dish turn like a restaurant dish.. but like the easy version?. so in the end? super smart .
6. Saffron Outside the Plate? The Crazy Stuff.
So now that we go with kitchen vibes… some history talks mention the usage for textile.. and clothing.. we see saffron used for things you would never see in the fridge like painting… dyes (think super regal purple shades – like what emperor would where all over!). its always about rich culture. there even those ancient medicine use… they really trying make medicine from all place. there this part I am not so into because i know very little about them!. Still i see how it a really useful in other sector and things outside from plates and just simple food dish .

Alright, truth bomb: cause’ its so pricey… there plenty people out there trying to sell “ fake stuff ” so be carfull here people and pay attention… they’re stuff they just take things or plant and dye them to trick you . so it like being careful from the street game so just careful here people!. One trick for test here when buy a pack if the scent doesn’t give some strange strong fragrance like is “strong” even when far. it like perfume , like one-of-kind.. its something good to smell to get familiar before going with shop, its help! Also , Real saffron will dye your warm water bright yellow, but its wont dissolve, meaning its keep being whole thread in your water! that all super weird trick i get hear from friends… you probably go find more trick out there
8. My Totally-Not-Expert Takeaways
Okay so here’s the thing that all about : From personal story where I only get to see some of those threads in mom super rare yearly occasion now the thing here in my head like it a magical lil’ ingredient…its got all these dramatic stories, ancient empires fights… it brings those thing I never though it existed… also brings dishes like super level.. what I realize now is not that expensive after knowing what I told you people… because I never heard them . Saffron’s not just for super rich , fancy peeps. its got history, like family. And its something cool i think .
And sure, some of us only use when something very specific, and they can see the special occasion coming like big day, or christmas.. but the power inside that it kinda different from what you might know… I’m kinda itching to try it now a bit more and give these thread a real shot!.
9. So, is saffron really that special ?
This is the big question, isnt? Look , at the begin i was kinda like: “its only tiny lil things there”. now my perspective different…I’d say that after i read about its long long long long story here.. after i found that many hands was helping here, its really something different… The culture side with its story is just a big deal, Its worth knowing.
For all this that reason why I understand more the price now. Now if that makes it worth all those trouble? You decide that , im just the messenger, yeah? So its really worth it?, this up to you , But what you really should understand is: it’s WAY more than just the tiny sprinkle . Like it a piece from long history. So yeah I think that special. Not that kinda thing we always bump in grocery… at the end it the price from that process. Just like diamonds probably !. and yes it got more to think, just take time!.
