1. A Wild Saffron Appears!: My Journey From Confused Consumer to… Slightly Less Confused Consumer
Okay, so like, I went grocery shopping the other day (you know how it is!) and i ended up looking and reading all spice tags. Saffron prices got me kinda intrigued? And somehow a little jar of red threads ended up in my basket. I can not for the life of me remember how. Before all the panic and anxiety attack kicked in due to high price (lol jk), It dawned on me; all I had before was that the expensive saffron thing is kinda famous in Persian rice ( you know it , it is ) and dessert, like puddings… That’s all that I had and for all I know that may be the truth and i’m living in some alternate version. Honestly, the whole spice aisle sometimes freaks me out. All the smells are strong and mixed together its a overload in the nose. So basically? I’m a saffron newbie who is slowly trying to not be the stereotype (aka, that annoying human who buys a “high class ” product just cause he looks fancy). So I decided to become “a chef”. Or some random lady with spices who has way to much time, we can both be the answer! I need to investigate this spice , so i took the journey. Buckle up everyone, were on a spicy roll..
( oh by the way; can someone find a guide of what do I do next, and not get the prices higher? Help !)
2. The Golden Question: What’s Saffron Really About? (Flavor wise I mean!)
Alright, so what dose this thingy taste like? Like gold? LOL… no, not exactly. See this is hard since its flavor isnt in your face but also , its very strong… Does that make any sense? its that kind of complex flavor that you can never forget once you encounter. It’s definitely not “spicey,” and i’ll tell you, its kinda unique and kinda not… some articles says “slightly sweet”, maybe? , earthy but its floral??… The best way i can describe is ,it’s warm, complex and makes you think you’re about to make something gourmet! It’s the color too though…that vibrant yellow-orange that makes all my kitchen dreams like coming to life? Seriously though! I’ve had other golden or yellowish food like the ones made with turmeric , but they all scream “copycat”, and I think It’s fair to say Saffron taste… fancy? sophisticated? Yes that’s it… if your kitchen smells like you did something super good, thank your saffron.
Also, let’s be real, this spice is EXPENSIVE . We are all in deep crisis that some red threads costs this much, anyway….it makes me want to not mess it up! But my friend also tells me , she thinks its “metallic-y” , is she right? Do you get that vibe as well? I might ask around because i need more opinions about this one… Maybe in my next post!. I feel so lost right now.
3. Saffron’s Secret Clique: Spices it Play’s Nice With (and Maybe some it Doesn’t )
So i am learning stuff. And a lot! It’s clear that saffron doesn’t really hang with just ANY old spice . ( she’s too sophisticated you know). I figured that pairing her up with other stuff was gonna give that extra spice. Turns out some flavor combos are legit magic. and also turns out , my tongue its still figuring things out… So here are the VIP of her secret circle , what it reminds me and my thought, ok ? here goes!
- Cardamom: That Slightly Elusive Buddy. So listen. It has its moments… Like, its aromatic, slightly minty, kinda camphory all over, which I never get it right if I need sweet/ savory or… I still cannot decide (any help?). Cardamom its another high priced spice and when its blended with saffron i always see this very strong and almost overpowering flavor profile… Which is not terrible, since you end up thinking you eating some expensive royal thing..but that’s me.. and what if it overpowers what I cook, hmmmm. . When saffron meets cardamom, it becomes almost dreamy like, exotic even. It is a fancy combo but you know sometimes when you meet rich people they are a bit too… serious and stiff, if you get me, This pair makes me feel just that, very high class , but i can never really put in everyday basis… do i make sense?. Also, please feel free to tell me , since i need more thoughts on this since i get stuck..
- Cinnamon: Your Comfort Food, Reinvented :Okay, hear me out; who doesn’t like cinnamon? I sure dont hate it! And that makes a pretty fair match since im a saffron fan! . It gives warmth, almost cozy feels! That sweet touch? mhm. Cinnamon, with saffron brings out all this depth, this deep, sweet cozy, like that big old couch with hot chocolate kind of feels and saffron spices it all up ( literally!! LOL ). It transforms a “grandma’s apple pie” thing to something a tad more fancy, in a great and non threatening way! I can make cinnamon rolls for brunch all over again , oh man.. i’m feeling so fancy and hungry right now! I could talk all day how Cinnamon+ saffron make my heart very happy.. Its a classic but always hits that good spot . No more needed for explanation right?
- Cumin: A Tale of Middle Eastern Charm. :Cumin! This thing brings something a lil earthy, warm. I get “exotic night market in the faraway desert, kind of vibes”,. Saffron does that too, dont u think? Anyway, Cumin its like a grounded flavor for a big star. When you match them both? Its almost like an “odyssey for the tongue ”. Its great with soups or meaty things ( and don’t ask why I did chicken yesterday). When ever i smell them mixed together i just want to put them in any cuisine possible… It sounds silly but it makes me wanna explore middle east recipes in such level its wild. Did anyone felt that? Also this pairing reminds me a Moroccan thing ( maybe Tagine?).
- Turmeric: The Saffron Clone That Totally Gets Saffron : Ok this pair looks kinda like siblings! Both of em’ are that yellowy stuff , but turmeric, as you all know, is all in the affordable side , you know?. They look like a “saffron copy” to me, they make it seems almost… suspicious , I don’t know? ( am I sounding like that random paranoid uncle?). And yes i understand both has medicinal stuff and blah blah… lets cut this talk to this! It tastes okay when you combine em…It amplifies that golden tone , almost glowing, if you get what i mean. In flavor it gives a super strong “earthy”, but almost “less sophisticated “ when comparing the one that saffron does alone. I prefer if this one sits down from all that power house if we do an ultimate showdown…. but all jokes aside , these two makes some very colourful combo, but in taste i dont find too appealing for myself . but who knows, what about you ?
- Ginger: Zing Zang Zoom. Okay, i’ll be honest i never tried these two but i hear things ( dont judge!), the way i see this pair, is that if both had personalities they will be a mix of wild but very fancy kinda peeps you see at some fancy club and thinks “wtf are they doing” … and also like, Ginger adds that sharp zing, almost a spicy “wokeness “, do you see what im seeing? while saffron softens it a bit and make that sharp taste almost.. “polished”. It brings some unexpectedness in your palette like those “newbie youtubers” that goes very viral and have that very unpredictable and charismatic trait to it that we end up just starring , dont you agree ? The combination adds all these layers with its flavor that I’m ready for… (ok i am so lost here lol). it might go well on my next asian inspired cuisine so…wish me luck for that day ! . Maybe it needs to find “her space ” a little bit?
- Paprika: The Smoldering Partner In Crime: Smokey, slightly sweet and red… just like saffron!. So far my favorite ones is in the more sweet family ( that’s me , haha ) and this feels like in that middle. But also feels its a little daring, its more mysterious than cinnamon’s sweet cozy feeling , it’s that vibe when you say “something interesting will go on this kitchen!”. They both shares that boldness which makes me feel like I’m creating the culinary equivalent of a “fire dance.” Also gives that strong deep tone of colour in what your cooking. its so dramatic yet pretty! Its the duo for an elegant brunch and also gives that “night out with friends vibes”, if that makes any sense!. Maybe paprika is her rebellious cousin? idk! All I can say, Its an interesting choice if you wanna a deep layer of flavoir and its fun and risky too! And that makes sense with saffron, all these “good vibes”! I really like paprika !
- Chili Flakes/Powder: When life needs some Spices, I call you. Ok listen…This duo feels very “rebellious “. This was by total mistake when the “oops , not all it should be sweet!” happen when i had chili powder instead of paprika lol… I thought it was a mistake! A crazy thought hit me!. Saffron with a little “heat”? The result, something… special!. It’s the combination where sweetness meets some intense spicy and brings this unpredictable thing that’s just.. WOW!. Its that random crazy stuff your younger version used to do, so its something from the heart i think! The heat plays out and mixes well the “unique saffron” flavor and its just… chefs kiss?. Honestly, these pairing is the best and if you like your palette adventure… This pairing its definitely what we want in all cases ( atleast for me)!. I still cannot put a proper word in what this makes me feel, but if you have.. tell me. I might need the help here… I am starting to run out of descriptive adjectives! Haha!
- Clove : My Winter Season Go To Spice : This mix feels to me “seasonal”? Maybe its my mind? It always gets my attention with that kinda strong warmth taste , very close to cinnamon! Also its dark so it looks a bit mysterious. I can say saffron is on her fancy side so if you mix clove with it will create this “festive spice box vibe”, kinda similar to “the christmas spices”. Do I sound super extra for thinking these things? Maybe? If they where humans it would be those girls you see all comfy and happy ready to decorate everything for the holiday. .Its not an all year thing like paprika or even chili flakes…it makes a great option for a “ winter vibe” for those who like a warm spice and sweetness. Also that dark brown looks pretty cool when its in small quantity!. Can’t explain more , really… Its so clear that my brain went “happy and all cozy”.
- Black pepper : Not to much please, maybe some! So this makes some senses! Hear me out , we put this bad boy in everything..right? Salt + pepper..classic thing, right? Saffron when you mixed it brings a “tiny kick” if that make senses? In other words , not overwhelming, subtle , its all about enhancing the experience.. The key its small quantities !. Pepper helps with flavors. And because saffron its that special unique girl in the spices department .. makes her an important piece of a whole! , It’s the same “tiny little pinch ” you do when seasoning… and I would still say, its ok. I might give a 80% for this duo! ( you are good , keep it up!)
- Rose: Sweet Saffron, oh man.. the memories!: Okayyyy.. so i am all emotional with this choice because this screams my grandma! Rose + saffron = a magical dessert in Persia! They look SO GOOD together! The red from the saffron mixed with dried pink petals.. they are twins! its a perfume for the eye, trust me!. Also flavorwise ? OMG… This one make my grandma desserts just appear, all her yummy rosewater things that has saffron touch all over!! My inner self has an overdose in positive feels! And i love how those mix brings those layers.. like , sweet flowers combined with slightly sweet of saffron with hints of floral? YESSS!! if this its not perfect idk what it is… 110% my go to combo ( with out any second thoughts!)
4. My “Experiments” Gone Wrong… Or Right?! (Spoiler: Maybe)
So i had my “mad scientist in my kitchen days” because all these made me have wild thoughts that end up being me trying weird thing . Once I threw all in with rice and all i can taste is a random mess of too many different smells which i do NOT recommend ( lol ). One time i did icecream with ginger and saffron ..not that nice at all!. Lesson Learned , go one by one, one small at the time. So for now lets just not do crazy thing before having a deep check of what works and what not!. Its the moment i had to “ calm down”.
But… there is hope! My first cinnamon saffron tea , the success that came that I’m still enjoying right now (as we speak )! and the day i paired with chili in my lentil soup! Who knows, tomorrow my cooking mind goes with all that craziness i just described .. but thats life isn’t it?
5. My go-to Dishes ( when I have time , lol)
Right, I also thought to write some of what im enjoying right now that is saffron related , I will list down because, i’m running low on mental juice right now:
- Cinnamon & Saffron Rice pudding : Cozy times
- Saffron chili lentil soup: Spice girl style
- Saffron and rose pancakes: for those days i wanna see things fancy on a Sunday
- Turmeric/Saffron golden Milk with a hint of black Pepper : The “almost heal everything ” drink when i’m low on energy or I don’t feel well.
Yeah… basically anything that will get saffron some love into it will pass ( im sorry for that!). All simple, nothing ” fancy schmancy” so I guess my recipe is kinda just “a beginner level saffron gal things!” haha.
6. Spices- Pairing Don’ts : ( the don’t get along)
And listen now… cause saffron it very peculiar so she DOESN’T hang out with a couple of her fellow spices .. which can be very dramatic in its own way haha.
- Very herbal strong aromas : i know its basic logic , but stuff like oregano and rosemary … makes things a hot mess!. This two are not saffron bff material if you ask me!. That “mediterranean feel” its out of saffron zone and the mixture creates a “random” food with no “purpose”! You better forget about it.. . It simply doesn’t do her justice, trust me!
- **High notes citrusy stuff: ** lemon and such with this kind of spice?? No. A total and solid NO!! It feels as random as using a “neon pink dress in a formal party” . it can also taste “wrong”… but i cant really describe that mess but you dont want to have that! Also do NOT expect any amazing results here . Maybe for baking we have to discuss this further …
- Very bitter spices : it brings a terrible taste! I just need to say the obvious: Not a good pairing in all case ( and my stomach confirmed ) lol . It over powers all that sophistication i mentioned all before .. a HUGE NO!
- Heavy garlic: too sharp for this delicate flavor!! its not that obvious because people think of pairing “onions & garlic in any dishes”… yes , do it but leave saffron out… please! Its better off! Its all the same , those overwhelming stuff its too “ much”. Less is more and keep this combo in separate dish.. thank me later!
7. My Big Saffron Conclusion (That Is Subject to Change)
Okay so! after some random thoughts i understand Saffron its not just that pretty expensive “red stuff ”. Its a powerful flavor when it’s used right ( im working on it!). The amount of things we can make is huge if you dare to play a bit… but remember that there’s definitely spice cliques for all this madness , and i did enjoy my process of trying a bunch of this pairing and some not so great adventures too! There’s some magic happening, and all I need is continue that deep saffron discovery so , for all of the saffron community in there, i wish you good adventures , stay tuned with me on the next chapter! I might bake stuff, im really onto something.. i need to put in ” the scientist in me mode “.
8. Final thoughts ?
So, to sum it all… saffron? its pretty neat, guys! Even though I still struggle a tiny bit on flavor notes I can now clearly see all her charm (lol, i make it sounds like she has feelings right!). I have a whole new perspective when i open that “saffron crayon” . And you? What was your experience? Tell me in comments! Maybe, if you want , give me some suggestion in my next saffron themed food recipe and thoughts, lol!! And thats the story! Have fun being messy like me! bye!. (btw sorry for the typos i am a human afterall , sorry haha).
