The Lure of the Scarlet Gold: Why Saffron’s So Prone to Scams

Okay, so saffron. It’s like this mythical spice that people rave about, makes all your rice go super gold like you are a pro! But its actually like the real “gold” and the way people sells it can become dodgy too . Honestly its the price guys, like legit expensive. It’s basically more expensive than drugs and that makes it an A+ choice for scammers to mess around with (sorry mum, dont judge!).
Like you gotta understand that saffron only grows certain ways on this pretty little purple crocus flower, but uou know its those delicate red strands at the flower’s inside and these are like the thing we look for to cook or flavour , takes so much time to hand-pick, it super small amount comes in each flower.
Think about it this way you have to have more flowers than usual to do some decent spice out from there! Its actually why this little threads became gold of the culinary world! , and if it’s worth gold.. people out there they would go that route of selling fake or half or quarter quality of the deal you wanted in the first place.
They don’t care at all like i do, but just your money ! so thats a sad sad scam of the human race ! We always end up looking bad when there’s a valuable items involved!

Color Me Deceived: How to Spot Fake Saffron by Color

Okay, so first big tell? Color. Real saffron should be deep, rich, kind of reddish-orange. Its actually should remind you about burning flame with strong yellow reddish tone if you actually ask me ! Now, here’s where it get kinda scary if u have no idea of saffron: if it’s neon orange like your crayola marker, or a crazy bright red almost fake looking that its all like “heyy, im obviously fake saffron”, so better give it a run for its life, cause your money is about to go. If its that orange and that red just throw it right away guys trust me. Also be warned if they have parts with no orange tones and just has lot of red.. something its just completely wrong. Like its too deep red ( its usually sign that there is a mixture there so don’t go ).
Don’t expect everything be even color either if you are buying the real saffron!. Cause its organic and it’s gonna have its own twist and uniqueness like we do so.. its okay!. Each thread may be have some different color in small tiny ways!. This isnt a color printing shop this are threads ok?. Its okay! If the threads got their colors like all over the place ( but on same side ) that okay thats how it supposed to be lol

The Scent of Betrayal: What Real Saffron Smells Like (and What It Definitely Doesn’t)

Scent test! Now we are gettinf fancy (lol)! real Saffron should have this super unique aroma! think sweet, but a little bit metallic if i have to go specific, bit flowery kinda honey note on top, really smells of old and very earthy too and you are like OMG this little strings has that magic in em?!. It makes you wanna cook already. Its kinda really specific for each batch. but usually u feel like some sweet smells of floral with an old earth undernote there.

Here is a real hard thing to detect.. fakes will often try to fool you by putting random perfumes or smells , it’s all chemical or random weird sweet perfumes , its nothing natural if it smell funny. So, If your saffron smell very like a drugstore cheap perfumes and something thats not food related is all a big NO! Throw away!. It usually means that some dodgy man decided to spray this shit and get your money out lol.. or something its like chemical scent then your golden saffron you dreamed of becomes another garbage ! lol

Tastebud Torture: How To Taste The Real Deal ( and tell the Fakes one’s away)

Taste time. Saffron ( if you try by itself, without putting any ingredient) doesn’t exactly has a * strong * tasty by its self lol! It’s subtle. What should be in that mouth experience, it must have slight but noticeable flavor that some call earth or maybe honey or hay in mild subtle. If you put one little strand of saffron by its self it gives you bitter sweet undertone something to know if your little threads are fake ( if tastes like anything but bitter and honey or earth).
If they’re like tasteless like water, you are done ! Its probably gonna be something that you did pay a lot of money and have absolutely zero result, and also may be dyed by something you have no idea!.

Also don’t forget. Never ever ever ( even in dreams!) taste anything thats very sweet with no bitter under-tones.. this a big no big no. it’s 100% fake. they added lot of sweet to have an interesting thing going to your buds so, better avoid them at any cost

Thread Bare Facts: What You Need to Know About the Strands

Okay so saffron its not only the color, not only the smells and tastes , but its also has how it looks like. Real saffron threads they look real they look alive. the tip its flared and some parts get wider while it slowly ends up ( kinda ). They’re not like flat or straight lines or looking chopped , each threads in authentic batch is different they each look different, just how each human are, each single thread will have it uniqueness! The thread isn’t same in thick , or same width on tip , they’re like lil squiggly lines ! that will also change at their own and do each thread at its way ! like unique snowflakes
If you’re seeing everything totally uniform like some plastic parts made in machine they are fake for sure, it should have flaws here and there too lol. Some are thin while the others are kind of little chunky (lol)

Pricey vs. Worth It?: Knowing The Value of Genuine Saffron (not all those expensive bags)

Yeah.. Saffron aint cheap guys, there are good reasons for that as i mention earlier but just so you guys got the full vision.. its always because the hard process its hand pick , needs a bunch of flowers for just a single small amount, its just nature guys this how the thing roll! The genuine is gonna be in expensive territory cause its the price that you gotta pay in human energy and its labor behind the scenes to hand pick that little bit threads so they could sell for you and cook something yummy for the tummy, If you stumble upon a pack of “super duper amazing deal of saffron ” with in low cost its absolutely an instant warning cause nobody sells stuff cheaper they worth lol. its also a 90 % they fake ones or mixed , it can be harmful or with absolutely zero taste or result . (like that day i failed chemistry haha..)

Real Saffron worth their weights on golds cause not cheap guys!. Its like.. we’re at that spot where buying quality, we need to be open our wallets lol
If they’re very low in prices (and has some huge “deals”) it’s most likely faked so try to avoid if you see them in any online or any street stalls.. and in online is even trickier . cause you just never know!

Packaging Fails: Clues From the Label

The Packaging gives us many good stuff too! Like how authentic brand look!. Look at labels to see if it is the best possible saffron package cause it gives all that information! Good saffron dealers are very open of where its harvested date, which specific flower part its included and the amount per product in specific container. and not some strange word in other strange foreign language in another part of the planet! Real Saffron dealers have names and good brands lol and they dont usually do something sneaky or dodgy. Look for certifications or country of origin details so at least you can kinda verify (maybe..) that it’s been like a legal / safe products, but as i told, trust more what your eyes tell then what those papers tells, cause some could pay fakes labels too, and this its whole scam and its getting complicated, but at least be alert so your brain start making links of whats a scam and what it’s a not (lol). I should have that alertness back at chemistry class! Haha.

Where to Shop?: Knowing Where the good stuff Hide

Ok this hard one since online there are bunch of people trying to sell us fake saffron without showing nothing, if your in actual real place then go for specialty spice stores or places which are focused for foods like big names gourmet places, farmers’ markets too are ok but need extra care. Cause big companies oftenly look more for quality and can show real products with certifications, while little shops could end up a bad idea lol or the market are full of fakes. if your shopping at real markets please go check them more careful then in specialty stores. and also avoid any little stand shops in little alley lol!.

Shopping for saffron online, needs more alert so read all that tiny descriptions, go for brands that are highly recognized ( with good reasons) with customer reviews that seem to actually human cause bots give 1000 starts no effort on it !. It’s like doing research papers guys!.
Try find stores with like “trust seal” symbols . those seal ( although there could be fakes, at least you would think about this before you do any moves.) you gotta check customer review cause many people usually fall under same pit as they describe fake items! So you could find similar pattern to a bunch of customers saying the same as fake to put it on a black list!.

Testing, Testing, One, Two: A Few at-Home Tests That May help (May not! lol)

Here’s some home experiments to (hopefully!) save your bucks or put you a spot with doubts in real life situation. Ok: Put few saffron strands into some warm water and lets say one to 5 minutes .
The real stuff should slowly slowly make some water into a yellowish /orange color , the real color from real saffrons usually are slow process and are kinda mild at first . While some that goes faster the liquid it goes yellow in instant is sign that are color dyes and all that shit so probably fakes too. ( and some also does not go at all )

Second test you could put one thread on a paper napkin , wet it with little water or a moist with small drops . The paper it won’t get too red ( should be like yellow/gold orange if its authentic ones ), real color is like a weak mild , more on orange/ gold tone. the dyes ones always leave strong fake like stain cause those red dye doesn’t go well or the other that never really fade in their colors , ( while fakes give weird colours or some stain is to too red, dark orange and stay too strong). it just the easy way for them cause is the quickest but the fakes one are obvious.
Remember its real deal here is supposed be orange-yellow in watery form!.

Conclusion: My Saffron Journey (and hopefully, you don’t repeat the errors)

Well, we been trough this all ! I been there and still dealing with those scary bad experiences I’ve done by myself, It really gave a new look about shopping spices . Hopefully this can do something with you to give that extra alert sense. Learning to look, smell, taste, and even testing that makes us not fall on same mistakes that so many of us made!. And so far you read it, It’s kind a journey, lol and hopefully you can be smart by this read lol ! Saffron might have that “glamour vibe” in all gold in cooking, but its also has shady places that a lot of bad actors lurking there. Stay sharp out there !.
Lets use our brains ok! Cause these “Saffron scammers” out there have so many plans to rip our money but as long you are ready you may even avoid some mistakes lol. You’ve been warned.

Question and thoughts: few things i wondered

So, I’m kinda left wondering about these things after my deep dive on that scarlet gold stuff :
Why there is a need for them to put food dye and sell something not real as “genuine ” stuff? they should give the opportunity to everyone and be legit! like really! so rude! ( lol ).

If you find that one “perfect bag” of saffron (which for my wallet would take like ages lol) is there also ways to use more of those saffron with out spending a fortune??. is there a kind of a rule to not waste? Or im asking too much? haha

Why real saffron is so different and complicated than any other normal spices? why life is so complicated ? what is even this thing called human interaction and is the social life a part of my curriculum to do life ? or the earth? wow i have questions…

Okay! That’s it for the epic saffron saga! Good luck out there and be smart buyers lol ! Remember. Be wary. Do your homework.
